The Pass Photography Prints is the work of Alyx Klem, a photographer and lover of overseas adventure based in Tofino, BC. Originally from Alberta, Alyx moved to Vancouver Island in 2001 and soon discovered the joys of the coast, deciding to make Tofino home in 2008.

In 2015 Alyx bought a Canon 5D. He liked the idea of having a camera to take on his travels, and to shoot friends at the beach. Over time, Alyx developed his skills behind the lens until, in 2023, he decided to pursue photography as an integrated way to find more fulfilment in his work and complement his lifestyle.

Alyx’s portfolio showcases an evocative and eclectic mix of beaches, mountains, wildlife, silhouettes, colors, contrasts, patterns, symmetry, natural phenomena, and more. His goal is to enhance your space with quality art that amazes, inspires, and captivates. Sutton Pass, or the Pass, has always been a place of inspiration for Alyx. The scenic mountain peaks, windswept trees, and clear blue waters of the many creeks and rivers along the winding, narrow highway create a raw, coastal aesthetic that is incredibly unique. The natural beauty of the Pass is made even more special by the anticipation of what lies ahead—Tofino, Ucluelet, and all the magic the West Coast has to offer.

To quote Alyx: “For me, the Pass represents 'coming home' or
'almost there.' When driving westward through it I often feel a build of excitement as I look from one view to another, all the while dreaming of the sandy beaches, waves and a seemingly endless ocean to come.

Conversely, heading to the east side of the Island, the Pass and the coastal mountains are the partition to hot summer weather and some of the best lakes in BC. In the same manner, the long drive over the mountains serves as a buffer to the 'outside world'—the shops, rec centers, and other resources that the West Coast lacks.

The Pass lies at the heart of these settings. While the highway can test your patience, the views are nothing short of stunning, and the destinations on either side are an outdoor lover’s dream. To me, the Pass is both nurturing and inspiring—it symbolizes home and travel while holding a beauty worthy of being showcased. It has excited me and provided endless inspiration over the years, so it was only natural that I eventually made it a part of my work."
